Salvaged Material

The isolated and awe inspiring coastline of Southeast Alaska is blanketed by stands of immense, old growth forest. The remarkable beauty of this wood is like nothing else in the world. Arc Wood & Timbers
has carved out a niche in the high-end "green" building market utilizing salvaged timbers from the vast coastline of Alaska. We specialize in ecologically friendly forest salvaged timbers that are extracted from the forest floors of Southeast Alaska.

We use forest friendly extrication methods to remove the "Blown Down", or "Dead Standing" timbers without damaging the natural landscape (please refer to definitions below). Arc has the capability to produce free of heart center (FOHC) timber cuts with dimensions of 20" x 36" x 40'.

It is very rare to find old growth timbers of this size in today's market since the majority of old growth trees have been cut down or are under protection in North America. Some of the trees that we have salvaged out of Alaska have
DEFINITIONS

"Blown Down" is defined as a tree that has been uprooted and fallen over to the forest floor. The general cause of a blown down is due to the severe climatic gale storms that take place every season on the sloping mountains of Southeast Alaska. We have uncovered blown down sites where acres of beautiful old growth trees have been blown over by the fierce Alaskan winter storms.

Instead of allowing these trees to rot and decay into the earth, Arc Wood & Timbers prides itself in salvaging these timbers and producing exquisite architectural wood elements that can be appreciated and admired for centuries.

"Dead Standing" is defined as a tree whereby its limbs are no longer producing green needles or seed bearing cones. Like all living things, eventually trees get old and die. Removing these dead standing trees allows the sunlight to penetrate deeper into the forest floor which promotes the regeneration of new seedlings. Working with the State of Alaska (Division of Forestry), the USDA Forest Service, and Arc's group of "Eco-Loggers", we receive the required permits to safely remove these dead standing trees before they become susceptible to rot, decay, and insects.

Some of the dead standing trees we have salvaged have dated over 800 years in age. These trees were around several hundred years before Columbus ever set foot on American soil.

dated over 800 years in age. These trees existed several hundred years before Columbus ever set foot on American soil. It's pretty hard to imagine. Our old growth, salvaged material produces beautiful, high grade "green" timber products. Arc's timbers can be custom milled into any size, shape, or grain orientation, and can be graded for both appearance and structural loads.

The Salvaging method utilized
by Arc was founded by Aaron Martin in the late spring of 1999. After discovering the incredible timber that was lying on the beaches of Southeast Alaska, Aaron began researching the possibility of harvesting these washed up treasures. He started referring to these trees as "gold on the beach". Operating in the manner which Aaron had designed, Arc Wood & Timbers continues to bring the most beautiful, fine grained, salvaged timbers out of Alaska.
