About Arc

The isolated and awe inspiring coastline of Southeast Alaska is blanketed by stands of immense, old growth forest. The remarkable beauty of this wood is like nothing else in the world. Arc Wood & Timbers is dedicated to sourcing the most unique, sought-after woods on earth. By sheer size, grain and beauty, our quest has produced extraordinary material.

Arc Wood & Timbers provides custom milling for large old growth timbers both salvaged and harvested out of Southeast Alaska. Our timbers come from tight grained, old growth logs, dating 200 - 800 years old. Arc has the capability to produce free of heart center (FOHC) timber cuts with dimensions of 20" x 36" x 40'. These large scale appearance grade structural timbers provide an excellent alternative to modern glue-laminate construction.

Arc utilizes Radio Frequency Vacuum (RFV) kiln technology that allows us to dry our timbers down to 10% moisture content in less than 10 days, regardless of the timber size. This state of the art of drying technology is 10 times faster than conventional drying practices used today by most companies. Arc Wood & Timbers has carved out a niche in the high-end building market.

Each of the species that we sell has unique qualities and advantages in specific building applications. Builders and Architects have been amazed by the beauty and quality of the material that is available from Arc Wood & Timbers. We have had architects call our old growth timbers "furniture quality beams."

The species of wood that Arc sources include the following:

  • Alaska Hemlock (Hem-Fir)
  • Alaska Sitka Spruce
  • Alaskan Yellow Cedar
  • Western Red Cedar
  • Douglas Fir - British Columbia and Oregon
  • Redwood - Northern California

There are 2 sourcing options when choosing timbers from Arc. The first is material that is milled from 100% old growth salvaged timbers, the 2nd option is material from live harvested old growth trees that are logged based on regulated timber sales conducted by the State of Alaska (Division of Forestry) and
the Forest Service (USDA). Both options produce equally beautiful, high grade material; however the lead times required for salvaged timbers are longer based on the fact that we must locate, salvage, and mill the product if we don't have the logs in inventory.

The quality and sheer size of the timbers produced from these trees has not been seen for a long time. The greatest advantage that Arc has with its old growth timbers is that the material can be custom milled into any size, shape, or grain orientation that you need. Arc can also provide material that can be graded for appearance and structural loads. This is a big advantage especially in timber frame construction. We have a strong focus on large custom timbers for timber framing; however Arc can be your supplier for any dimension of lumber you require, from 1x4's to 20 x 30's. Arc specializes in high quality, old growth, tight grain material; which is commonly used for exposed (appearance grade) structural beam & truss packages, corbels, T&G
flooring/paneling, false beam work, fascia, casework/cabinets, bridges, bevel siding, decking, trellises, etc.

Arc can tailor its products to accommodate the most unique design specifications. We will ship to any location worldwide, which has allowed us to grow our customer base to builders and architects located in Hawaii, Colorado, Vermont, Ohio, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, California and China.
